SSE overplaying the cap card as it pulls the plug on merger
Commenting on news that SSE has dropped plans to merge with Npower, Sally Jaques from auto-switching service weflip, said,
“While SSE are pointing to the energy price cap as the reason for pulling out of its merger with Npower, the real problem for both these companies could be the fact customers are switching away, in search of better deals. While there may have been some savings passed down from the two combining forces, the reality is, customers are going to go where the best deals are, and with the gap between the big six standard variable tariffs compared to the best buys still large, it couldn’t have been guaranteed their customer numbers would have grown as a result of this merger.
“It would be great to think the cap will really be that significant for customers, but while it will inevitably dent the profits of the big six, it won’t solve the energy bill nightmare for millions of households. The only sure-fire way to make sure you’re getting a good deal on your energy bill is to switch, and to do so year after year. If you’re not confident of keeping on top of it yourself, consider an auto-switching service that constantly moves you to a better deal and does the hard work for you.”
How weflip works
Customers register their details and provide information including current supplier, tariff and energy usage – which can all be found on an existing bill. weflip’s algorithm pinpoints the best deals and customers choose which tariff to flip to first.
After the initial switch, weflip will take over and continue to scour the market, flipping them to better deals automatically, for life (when a minimum saving of £50, including exit fees, can be made). No further manual comparisons are needed, as weflip does all the work for you.
