GoCompare celebrates mascot Gio Compario’s 80th TV appearance with new advert

New ads focus on the voice behind GoCompare’s brand icon

GoCompare, one of the most recognisable money-saving brands in the UK, is to launch a series of new brand adverts celebrating the 80th TV outing of their iconic mascot, Gio Compario.

‘The Voice’, the first of the new ads, will air from 1st October 2020 across channels including ITV1, Channel 4 and Sky Sports, and will mark the 80th appearance of the opera singer since he first arrived on UK screens in August 2009.  The ads will also run across video-on-demand and social media channels including YouTube.

The Voice, which will be shown in 60” and 30” TV slots, draws on the substantial talents of the man behind the moustache, classically trained opera singer Wynne Evans, and features him performing a rendition of Puccini’s famous tenor aria, Nessun Dorma.

Wynne, who has played Gio Compario since the character’s conception, steps out from behind the legendary moustache to showcase his own talents and highlight GoCompare’s free £250 excess benefit for car insurance customers – described by Wynne in the ad as ‘one of the best deals around.’

The new ads were filmed at Wynne’s home and build on the series of adverts created at the same location during lockdown.

The campaign has been managed by GoCompare’s in-house marketing team, while the creative concept was developed by Siân and Chris Wilkins.

Lee Griffin, CEO and founder of GoCompare, said, “Our focus has always been on saving people time and money, and that has never been more important than it is right now.  We know that Gio is a character that always grabs people’s attention, but this latest twist allows us to deliver the money saving message in a slightly different way.

“A lot of people still don’t realise that Gio is played by a real-life, professional opera singer and it has worked really well showcasing Wynne and Gio in recent campaigns.  The new ads are designed to take that further and let viewers get to know the man behind the iconic tache.

“When we first created Gio, we were looking for an actor and a separate opera singer to do the voice-over.  It was Wynne who convinced us he could do it all with his performance.  He’s been a fantastic ambassador for over ten years now, helping millions of people save money, and he’s been instrumental in helping to create one of the UK’s best-known brands.”

GoCompare

GoCompare is a comparison website that enables people to compare the costs and features of a wide variety of insurance policies, financial products and energy tariffs.

GoCompare does not charge people to use its services, and it does not accept advertising or sponsored listings, so all product comparisons are unbiased. GoCompare makes its money through fees paid by the providers of products that appear on its various comparison services when a customer buys through the site.

When it launched in 2006, it was the first comparison site to focus on displaying policy details rather than just listing prices, with the aim of helping people to make better-informed decisions when buying their insurance. GoCompare has remained dedicated to helping people choose the most appropriate products rather than just the cheapest, and has teamed up with Defaqto, the independent financial researcher, to integrate additional policy information into a number of its insurance comparison services. This allows people to compare up to an extra 30 features of cover.

GoCompare is the only comparison website to be invited to join the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
